SUMMARY:MALSCE - Rising Tides & Changing Waters: NOAA's Plan to Update the National Tidal Datum Epoch
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 23\, 2024\n12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nThis Zoom Video Webinar will be recorded \nMaintained by NOAA’s Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS)\, the National Tidal Datum Epoch (NTDE) is the collection of water level observations over a 19-year period to generate a set of tidal datums. NTDE incorporates data from 2\,000+ coastal water level stations. Updating this reference period will ensure the nation’s tidal datums are based on recent data and provides a common reference frame to account for long-term effects of land movement\, sea level rise and changes in tidal constituents. Accurate tidal datums are critical for federal\, state\, and private-sector coastal zone activities\, including navigation\, storm warning\, and marine boundary determination. \nAfter 2026\, CO-OPS will replace the existing 1983-2001 NTDE. The new 2002-2020 NTDE will include the CO-OPS repository of permanent real-time and historic stations with available data. New datum automation procedures will generate new NTDE products more efficiently to deliver the update on schedule.

SUMMARY:MALSCE- What Railroad Records Are Available at the National Archives?
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 15\, 2023\n12:00 PM – 1:30 PM\nZoom Video Webinar \nThis webinar will provide a description of what railroad records are available at the National Archives. When Mike Sullivan retired from “Iron Horse” three years ago and PanAm decided not to replace him\, area surveyors lost a great resource for finding all sorts of records for Boston & Maine Railroad in Massachusetts\, New Hampshire\, and other parts of New England. Since then\, MALSCE leaders have been looking for other possible information sources and have found the one person who probably knows more about the railroad records at the National Archives than anyone else. \nDavid will familiarize the participants with the Valuation Act of 1913 and the subsequent activities of the Interstate Commerce Commission’s (ICC’s) Bureau of Valuation. David will cover the different series of valuation records at the National Archives\, their relationship to land surveying\, and the procedures concerning access to these records.

SUMMARY:MALSCE: UAV Mapping Educational Series (Session 5)
DESCRIPTION:UAV Mapping Educational Series\nThursdays\, January 13 & 27\, February 10 & 24\, and March 10\, 2022\n8:00 AM – 10:00 AM\nZoom Video Webinar \nThe UAV Mapping Educational Series is comprised of five two-hour webinars that are designed to teach professionals about the concepts behind UAVs\, mission planning\, data collection\, data processing\, georeferencing\, quality assurance\, lidar alternatives\, attributing the information\, national standards\, and products. While directly related to traditional fixed wing large camera format photogrammetry\, the use of UAV in producing similar products has dramatic differences due to no pilot on board\, smaller format handheld cameras\, multi-ray overlaps of photos\, self-calibration of cameras\, automated pixel matching\, and automated classification. The use of airborne GNSS and inertial measuring system (IMU) sensors has changed the traditional georeferencing problem dramatically. \nIn addition to lectures\, the series’ featured sessions will utilize example data and example software\, and allow time for questions and answers. Each two-hour session will include a ten-minute break and a quiz to measure participant learning. Registrants who view all five sessions and pass all administered quizzes will receive a certificate of completion. For participant convenience\, the first four sessions will be recorded and made available between classes. Participation in the live fifth session is mandatory. Subjects covered during each session are as follows: \nSession 1: Flight planning\, scale of raw photography vs. focal length vs. pixel resolution vs. camera angle\, percent overlap considerations\, limits in forested areas and at building edges\, fixed wing vs. rotor vs. hybrid UAV\, use of gimbal mount\, ASPRS accuracy standards and client needs.\nSession 2: Automated image matching\, concepts of aerotriangulation\, measuring control images\, quality indicators from the bundle adjustment.\nSession 3: Airborne GPS-IMU possibilities\, optimizing ground control and its measurement\, using ground control vs. coordinate comparisons as a quality assessment\, relationship to ASPRS accuracy standards.\nSession 4: UAV Lidar as an alternative to photography\, Lidar advantages and disadvantages\, Lidar intensity returns to color\, control measurement with Lidar\, point density requirements\, bare earth vs. digital surface models.\nSession 5: Automated classification processes\, manual classification processes\, converting .las to vector information\, helping a client understand deliverables and language in the deliverables. \nSpeaker: Raymond J. Hintz\, PLS\, PhD\, Professor\, University of Maine\nRaymond J. Hintz is a professor of surveying engineering technology at the University of Maine\, program coordinator for the B.S. program in surveying engineering technology and graduate coordinator for the Professional Science Masters in Engineering and Business surveying engineering concentration. His research interests lie in automation of data collection and processing of surveying and photogrammetric information. Dr. Hintz has published more than 50 articles in journal and conference proceedings related to surveying\, and is a registered land surveyor in the states of Maine and Florida. He is active in promoting UAS technology\, with a portion of two Photogrammetry courses he teaches dedicated to surveying and mapping using UAV technology. He also conducted nine one-day seminars to various organizations on UAV’s in the last two years. In addition to his academic experience\, Dr. Hintz is recognized for his role in developing several software packages including the Cadastral Electronic Field Book (CEFB)\, Cadastral Measurement Management (CMM) and Geographic Measurement Management (GMM). The CEFB enables automatic entry of measurement and automated field note information into CMM\, a computation tool for survey and analysis of cadastral surveys. GMM was adopted as the approved tool for development of the Bureau of Land Management’s Geographic Coordinate Data Base. \nRegistration Information\nRegistration Fees: $500/person for members*\, $750/person for non-members. \n*  Members of CALS\, MSLS\, NHLSA\, NYSAPLS\, RISPLS and VSLS can attend for the MALSCE Member rate. \nRegistration Deadline: Friday\, January 7\, 2022. SUMMARY:MALSCE: UAV Mapping Educational Series (Session 4)
